Get To Know Developmental Behavioral Pediatrician Dr. Ryan Uy

Dr. Ryan UyCoralis Health’s  Dr. Ryan Uy is a Developmental Behavioral Pediatrician currently residing in Washington, D.C., providing exceptional care there, as well as in nearby Maryland and Virginia.

We recently had the opportunity to sit down and chat with him about what motivated him to become a Developmental Behavioral Pediatrician, what he loves most about what he does, and what he likes to do when not helping patients and their families.

Why did you decide to become a Developmental Behavioral Pediatrician?

My brother, Francis, who has Down syndrome, inspired me to go into this specific field of medicine. Being exposed to an individual with a disability at an early age instilled in me empathy and care for this subset of the population.

He is the 4th child, and I’m the youngest of 5 siblings. Growing up, we were very close given how close our age was. He truly made an impact in my life.

What Is your philosophy of patient care?

When dealing with patients and their families, I treat them as I would a close friend or a dear family member – with the same candor and empathy.

I attribute this to my own personal experience and close connection with my own family member having a disability. I have seen my brother’s journey, struggles and triumphs throughout his lifespan, and draw empathy from that experience.

What do you like most about being a Developmental Behavioral Pediatrician?

What I love most about being a Developmental Behavioral Pediatrician is the opportunity to help parents understand their child better, so that they are better able to meet their needs and set them up for success.

Many people have assumptions and misconceptions about a child’s “development” and/or “behaviors”, but it is much more intricate and nuanced than what most people think.

It is the reason why we go through 3 years of further fellowship training after already being a pediatrician. A child’s development and behavior is truly complex and fascinating.

What challenges are you most concerned about in the field of Developmental Behavioral Pediatrics today?

The shortage of specialists in this field is definitely concerning and frustrating for families. The long wait lists and lack of professionals who are experienced in this field contribute to delayed detection, and thus intervention, misdiagnosis and/or mismanagement.

This ultimately affects the child and family negatively. However, I remain hopeful and optimistic that we can come up with innovative ways on how to address this issue.

When not helping patients, what are some of the other things you enjoy doing?

I enjoy traveling so I can see the world, learn different cultures, and try new foods. I also enjoy cooking, and spending time with family and friends. I like staying active to help keep me mentally and physically healthy.
